Are or Where You a Nurse? You’ll Like This

Wednesday Jun 10, 2009

Maybe you are a grandmother who is a retired nurse, and like to keep up with the current news in the field because you loved your work.

Maybe you have a daughter or son who is a nurse and might enjoy a site full of wonderful information just for nurses.

Maybe you even have a grandaughter or grandson who is considering the field or in the field, who would be encouraged by the things they will learn at the site I was introduced to today.

The site is appropriately called Scrubs, which I believe is the term for the clothing or uniforms that nurses where when on the job.  As a matter of fact, as the widget on the main page was scrolling through with pictures and associated articles, I found one about a daughter who inspired her mother to become a nurse at the age of 60…it’s a great story as are MANY of the stories at the online magazine…right down to stories about your favorite, or maybe not so favorite, TV-program nurses!

The site has been updated since I last looked at it some time ago for the summer season…with articles about:

  • Summer cloths, summer scrubs
  • For the female nurses, makeup and beauty
  • Tips for night nurses on how to schedule your meals and naps so that you can work at your best

A story I enjoyed was about the featured “nurse of the week”, a gentleman named Kerry Jeanice and his work during the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. You can nominate a nurse to be featured.

I am not a nurse, but still enjoyed the site very much, stop by and visit, you’ll find it helpful and inspiring!

7 Successful Work At Home Grandmothers

Tuesday Apr 7, 2009

I’m still contemplating changing the template to this blog, it’s been nice looking at Spring flowers, but I think it’s time to go for a more professional look.  But before I take time to do that, let me invite you to join me as I do what was suggested in lesson 2 of the 31 Days to a Better Blog challenge (I think you can still join!).

Over the year, we’ve featured a number of grandmothers and their work at home businesses.  I want to list them here in one post for you, to encourage or inspire you, if you are still trying to find your “niche”. Click the Grandmother’s name to visit their post for a lot more information about them, and how they started their business.

  1. Angie Baker is an example of someone who has taken a craft that she loves, jewelry making, and turned it into a business.
  2. Paula Jackson is a grandmother that I have known “virtually” for a number of years, and helps people keep their homes clean and healthy without polluting the environment.
  3. Darlene Demell is another grandmother in Canada who has a home business that provides delicious things to enhance your meals, your health and your home.
  4. Jackie Thompson’s post is a popular stop, she has built a business out of making military purses…her story is wonderful, do stop by for a visit.
  5. Self-Taught Artist - this is a grandmother I found while searching the internet, and was fascinated by her story and video, she has never attended art school, but is a talented self-taught portrait artist.
  6. Karen is a grandmother with a unique situation, all 3 of her children were born on the same date…no, they aren’t triplets, they were born the same date but different years.  Read about how she works at home in the country.
  7. Rita Sweet is another crafty grandmother who has started her own business making soap…you have to visit and see her hand made crayons, your children and grandchildren will love them!

That is only a few in the list, please contact me if I can feature you, it would be my pleasure to do so!  The only requirement is that you be a grandmother, a grandma “wanna be” like me, or “old” enough to be a grandmother.

Stroke Prevention & Business Idea in 1 Post

Friday Jun 27, 2008

Though my married daughter has not blessed us with a grandchild yet, and I’m not a Grandmom, I do work at home and have for years as a Certified Nutritionist. In this post, I’m sharing just one thing that I offer my clients. If you are involved in health care, or if you are marketing health products, this is something that you may want to offer your clients. The educational resources are wonderful, and the start-up (something you should be VERY careful of when you become involved with a company) is nothing unless you place an order, then there is a $15 fee for your membership kit. But you can join, and have a free website with access to a back office, and sign people up without paying a thing up front. The company provides educational articles on a weekly basis, like the one below:

Stroke is the nation’s third leading cause of death. Stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain stops due to a blood clot or burst blood vessel. According to a new study, being only moderately fit can significantly lower your risk of having a stroke.

The study was led by Steven Hooker who heads the University of South Carolina’s Prevention Research Center in Columbia, SC. The research was reported on February 21, 2008 during Hooker’s presentation at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference in New Orleans, LA.

For their research, Hooker and his colleagues used data from a study of more than 61,000 adults at the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas. After taking a treadmill test, the participants periodically answered health surveys. The latest research divided the group into four levels of fitness and looked at how many of them had strokes after following them for an average of 18 years.

The study found that men in the most fit group enjoyed a 40% reduction for risk of stroke compared to the least fit men. The most fit women enjoyed a 43% reduction in their risk of stroke compared with women in the least fit group. Hooker commented that even those who were moderately fit had a lower risk of stroke and that most people can reach that fitness range by walking briskly for 30 minutes a day, five times a week.

Spring is in the air and it’s time for all of us to put on our walking shoes. Finding 30 minutes a day to walk is easy if you try. Consider an early morning walk, a walk during your lunch break, a walk as soon as you get home from work or right after dinner. Take the dog along – take the kids along - and don’t forget your favorite Wholefood Farmacy snacks for wholesome nutrition and good, clean energy!
