Avoiding Work at Home Scams Tip 1

Sunday Oct 18, 2009

My son and sister have been looking for jobs using sites like Craigslist for some time, and while they are a good source (my husband and son have both found jobs using the site), they both tell me that many work-at-home business opportunists are using the site to fish for new people for their downline.

While I don’t think all ads posted are scams, which are generally defined as dishonest schemes for making money by dishonest means, or a way to trick somebody to obtain money or other goods from somebody by dishonest means…it may be a bit of trickery to post deceiving ads that look like they are salaried jobs when they are actually work at home opportunities for network marketing companies.

Do I have anything against network marketing? Not at all, a well run network marketing company that doesn’t make outlandish promises can be a good way to bring in extra income, but I do have a “pet peeve” about sounding like you are something you are not.

If you are posting an ad for a Work at Home job, be honest about what you are offering, and the how it will benefit the person, this way you can be sure that whoever “bites” on your ad is really interested, and not just a “lead” who is likely to be turned off when they hear what you are actually offering.

New Twitter Statistics and Your Business

Thursday Aug 13, 2009

The latest Twitter statistics are out, and even though I’ve had a love-hate relationship with Twitter this week due to outages caused by the hacker that shut down Twitter for a day or two, it’s still one of my favorite ways to network.

I thought I’d share some of statistics with you, and a thought or two on how they might affect your business communications on Twitter…now realize the study was done over a 10 day period…and I hope not within the past week - just kidding :-)

  1. 40% of tweets are pointless statements of fact, stating what the person happened to be doing at the moment, like “I’m eating a cookie”, “I’m watching television” etc.
  2. 39% were conversational tweets, and take place between 2 - 4 pm…what time zone I don’t know, but the report I heard was on the east coast.
  3. % of Spam and self-promotion is quite low
  4. News Media tweets peeked at about 2 pm Tuesdays
  5. Retweets took place most often on Monday mornings

I’m not sure how relevant all of this Twitter trivia is, but knowing when the most conversation is taking place was surprising to me.  I tend to spend my time on Twitter in the evenings, perhaps it would be better to visit during the afternoon hours when there is conversation going on.

One thing I know for sure is that if you want to promote your business, you have to first take time to share yourself, and I mean sincerely, not just to get, people will see right through that.

A mistake I made early on was to set up my blogs with “Twitterfeed” so that each post to my blogs was automatically posted to Twitter…and I never conversed at all…definitely wasn’t a good idea, any more than blasting out phrases like ”Made $1000 in my first week” etc…posts like that may bring in some, but don’t appeal to me at all.  I still use Twitterfeed, but spend a good bit of time conversing, too, and only have Twitterfeed tweet my posts every 24 hours.

It is possible to converse in 140 characters…take some time watching conversation,  ”follow” people you enjoy and hope that they will follow you back, you can “tweet” a person that is not “following” you, but you can’t send them a Direct Message.  Jump in and say hi.  Check your “replies” (if you tweet from your Twitter home page, you’ll find your “replies” in the right column where you see your username with a @ in front of it, in my case that would be @happynutrition) and “Direct Messages” regularly and respond…you can reply any time, even if the person who wrote to you isn’t online tweeting at the moment, they’ll see it when they check in again.

Do you have a Twitter business success story to share?  Please share in a comment!

Networking with Grandmothers on Twitter

Tuesday Feb 24, 2009

I spend more and more time in the wonderful world of twitter lately, how about you?  Twitter is a unique networking site, a place where you “follow” people and they “follow” you, a great way to connect and make friends, potential customers and clients.

If you are “following” someone, you can see their messages, called “Tweets” listed on your Twitter page. The best way to start “Tweeting” on twitter is to post friendly replies to people, not just “spam” like messages promoting your service or product. Twitter is fun! Enjoy it and learn by watching how others communicate.

On Twitter, your messages are called “replies” or “direct messages”.  To “reply” to someone, you put a @ in front of their username, OR, you point your mouse next to their message, and a “reply” option will appear for you to click on.  A “reply” is seen by everyone.

If you don’t want everyone to see your response to someone, then you send them a “Direct Message”.  This is done by clicking on their username and visiting their “home” page, and then looking down the bar on the right for “message (username)”.  Click on that to send a message privately.

You can view your “replies” or your “direct messages” by clicking on the appropriate link in the sidebar.

It’s not hard at all…the only trick is that your messages can only be 140 characters long…it’s fun to think of ways to say what you want in a short “tweet”.

This is a great way to network and meet people.  I’ll be back with a few more tips later this week!

Oh! By the way, if you’re already on Twitter, follow me at http://twitter.com/happynutrition and be sure to send me a message letting me know you found me here on Work at Home Grandmothers.

Can a WAHM or WAHG Make $ Doing Surveys?

Friday Nov 28, 2008

Have you ever wondered whether people actually make money doing those online surveys? I have joined a few survey services, and like one in particular, I receive offers by email each day. It’s a nice site called “Inbox Dollars”, click the button to the right see what that’s all about, and though you won’t get rich quick, you can make a little side money. And of course, you realize, that these people work with affiliate sites and if you sign up for something, they make a bit of money, and give you a little bit of that money.

You should never have to pay someone to join a survey site. Some people put together lists of survey sites, then charge you $30 or more just to have access to it, maybe some think this is worth it, but I fell for this once, and it wasn’t worth it to me.

/Here is a review on doing surveys to make money. I hope you enjoy!

A Review of Home Survey Workers

By: Brian Garvin

Wow, the Home Survey Workers website is pretty flashy for a company that deals in surveys. So of course when we were asked to do this review we were interested in learning more about their system. Will it be what you need to make some sort of secondary income? Will you be able to turn it into something full time? We aren t sure yet, but we’ll definitely share with you what we found.

What Questions Do You Need Answered

Because the Home Survey Workers seem to have all the answers all within there F.A.Q. Let s face it, we re all skeptical anymore after those three years of constant scams on the Internet. Heck, even now with phishing schemes circling our email accounts everyone is taking a step back and being very careful with what they read and or purchase.

So this is why we find it to be a crucial part of your research because not only will you be able to view answers to all the questions in your head, but you ll also learn more about the company. While there are only ten total answers to each question, we found them all to be helpful and we believe you will as well. Long story short, just go over there and take five minutes to read it. You’ll thank us later.

Getting a Taste Before You Start

It doesn’t matter if it s the Home Survey Workers website or another survey deal, you always want to see an example. Why? Well, if a site is promising you $5 $25 for one survey don’t you want to know how long it’s going to be? We don’t think you would enjoy this income avenue if it took you an hour to get paid $5. However, you’ll find a sample of their surveys right under the sample section located at the top of the page.

Is It Really The Perfect Job?

Well it really depends on who you talk to, but if you could possibly make $423 a day, wouldn’t you be interested? We aren’t really sure how they came up with that actual amount, but there has to be some sort of reason behind it. Towards the bottom, left hand side of the home page the different avenues you can take to make money with the Home Survey Workers program.

Surveys, focus groups, online orders, product reviews, and movie trailers are all available once you become a member of their site. You may be wondering if this is going to cost you any upfront money and the answer is, no. Just give them your name and email address before hand to get the rest of the information about their program.

Our Overall Analysis

When you first get to their website you might sit there and think, Wow, they look reputable. Especially with the nice professionally designed web page. While this may be true, we really want you to focus on the information that’s given to you after you have provided an email and address. Only then will you find the true content that will help you decide if this is for you.

The Basics: Tips on Starting a Home Business

Thursday Jul 31, 2008

There are many good articles out there to help you as you decide what home business you would like to pursue. As I find some that can be shared, I’ll post them. This one is very basic, a good one for the beginner. Get a pen or pencil and some paper, and get started with the tips offered in the following article by Roderick Allen, and if you have any questions, please feel free to post them as a comment.

Many people have the dream of someday owning their own business. The problem is, most people lack the capitol to start a company from scratch, or to purchase franchising rights. Some people might have a little tucked away, but are afraid to invest for fear of losing their money. If this applies to you, perhaps you should think about starting your own home business. Starting a home business with careful planning can gradually grow into something big, but chances are high you will not get rich overnight unless you come up with an invention that will grasp the attention of every consumer.

If you are interested in starting your own business but do not know where to start, try sitting down with a pen and paper to write down some ideas on the types of business you would like to have. When a person writes their plans or ideas on paper, it gives a visual focus on what the ideas are, and what the ultimate goal it. Think about all your talents that you have. What do you have a passion for? Write down any and all ideas, without censoring yourself. Then, go back, look over your list, and determine which of the ideas are real options for a home business.

The next thing you will need to do is figure out finances. You will need to do some research on the cost associated with starting a business in the industry you’ve chosen. Add to that the amount of money you wish to budget for new home office supplies. Also, if you re planning on quitting your current job, make sure to count the amount you ll need to ensure your bills are covered for a minimum of 3 months. This is the absolute minimum anyone should have saved for living expenses before letting go of their current source of income.

The next thing you want to master is marketing. How are you going to market your business? What is your advertising budget? What medium will you go through to reach your target audience? A web page is a definite must have in this day and age if you want to be taken seriously. Another thing you will most likely need is business cards. Finding a website that allows you to upload a photo and design a business card shouldn’t take very long, and they often have low prices. You may also want to consider non traditional options for advertising, such as large community networking sites, and video blogging sites. Creating a video to advertise your business allows your target audience to feel as though you are on the same level as them, helping them to decide they do, in fact, need what you are offering. Additionally, participating in related group conversations on large community networking sites while including a link to your webpage can be very effective in drawing traffic (and potential clients).

Whatever type of home business you decide to start, remember that is takes time to establish a client base. Don t expect huge profits right away. Obviously, the more time you invest in marketing, the more your client base is going to grow. Be sure to follow up carefully with all of your clients, as well. Having a great customer service reputation ensures your clients will want to refer their friends and family to you, and increases the number of repeat clients you will have.

Finding Money to Invest In Your Home Business

Friday Jun 27, 2008

There is never enough advise when it comes to choosing a home business. What works for one may or may not work for another. Keep searching and reading and asking questions, until the light goes on and you feel inspired! Love what you chose to do, and do it heartily!

Here’s an article that I hope will be another that will encourage you with ideas on how to save so you have more money to invest into your business.

How Women Can Find Free Money To Start A Business

By: Kathy Wilson

When a woman decides she wants to start her own business, one of her first thoughts is “how am I going to find the start up money”. Most women, especially these days, have tight budgets and family expenses that make starting a business seem like a luxury. Here are some great ideas how any woman can start her own business and invest in her future and that of her families, with free money.

First of all, when I suggest a woman start her own business, I usually recommend that she look at an online business. Online businesses are the fastest growing segment of work at home women, and require very little in start up costs or overhead, unlike many traditional businesses.

Second, when I talk about free money, I am not referring to spending months of your lives researching grants, or asking loved ones to front your business costs. There are easy ideas any woman can use to find money in their own budgets, but not take away from anything they are already spending!

*Start taking the shopping game more seriously. If you never use coupons because you think a few dollars here or there doesn’t make much difference, think again. According to ABC News, the average coupon user saves 12 of their family food budget. So if you are spending $600 a month on groceries and household items for your family and you decide this month to use coupons; that gives you $78 a month of free money that you were otherwise already spending. Let me tell you, you can run an online business for $78 a month! Don’t think you spend that much? Think again. Keep track of everything you buy for one month, then look at where you could save. Also, consider how you are spending your grocery dollars. I was shocked at how much I overspent with frequent trips to the store until I made a weekly meal plan and shopped by that. Having a plan saved me 30 off my grocery bill week after week! Try making a meal plan; you may have enough left over at the end of this week alone to start your business.

*Learn more about beauty. How can that help? Learn to do your own manicures or color your own hair. Trust me, no one will notice the difference. Even if you just skip every other beauty appointment, you could save $45 a month…more than enough to run your own online business. There are plenty of sites online to give you tips on home hair color or manicures and the like. (Oh, and an example of an online business there, too!)

*Got a Starbucks addiction? Who doesn’t you say? Well cutting back from that Venti to a Tall can save you $28 a month. (And a load of calories, too!) That is enough to run an online business as well.

*DON’T get sucked into those business “opportunities” that ask for money up front in exchange for allowing you to sell their product. I admit, those opportunities do work for some, but it’s a long hard (uninspired) road that most people quit long before they get a return on their investment. Better to start your OWN business doing something you love and believe in!

Learning to make money on the internet is a process, and sites like Women on the Net can show you how to start your own business for less than you’d spend on a pizza.
