We have talked about it before, and it’s worth talking about again, the importance of your presence on the web, and finding the right webhosting service for your business.
One of my favorite things to do is to build and add to my business website, and to write on my blogs through the web hosting service that I use. Finding a good service that is cost efficient, yet provides you with the tools you need is essential. In fact, you can visit this link to a site that lists the top 10 webhosting services of 2009.
When you are looking for a service, you want to consider some of the following:
- How many domains does the service allow you to have?
- How many email accounts?
- How easy is it to transfer your site from one domain to another if you want to move to a new hosting service?
- How much disk space do you have to work with and how much bandwidth?
- What “extras” do they offer?
- Do they offer you templates to build your site?
- How many FTP accounts?
Those are just a few things to consider in your search if you are interested in building your own sites for your business.
What do I think about FREE web hosting? I used it for a while, but you can only do one site, and, well, let me just give you this link to a blog post that explains it quite well called Free Hosting Is Not Always The Best Choice.
Every business owner should have a blog or website. Blogs are often preferred over websites because they are, or should be, updated regularly.
In my journeys and discussions on the internet, the topic often comes up as to which is better…free Wordpress.com, the Wordpress platform offered by Wordpress.org that you use on your paid-for hosting service, or free Blogger.com?
Personally, I use both blogger.com and, as is the case with this blog, wordpress.org’s platform, uploading as instructed as one the of 10 websites available to me for my yearly charge at my hosting service.
I also like Blogger, and am going to focus on this free service in this post. Since I have more than 10 blogs, and the annual fee for my hosting service allows only 10 sites/blogs, but offers unlimited domain names for a reasonable price, I purchase domain names and use them with additional blogs that I have on Blogger. I follow the instructions provided by blogger to connect the domain name to my blog. I DON”T set it up so that when you click on the domain name it “redirects” to the blog, but so that each individual post on the blog has the domain name within it’s url (the url is the blog “address”, starts with http://etc).
Personally, I prefer to use templates other than the ones that Blogger offers. Blogger has nice templates, but people who blog a lot are very familiar with them because there is only a limited number available. Because of this, your blog looks a lot like many others. You should strive to have a blog that is as unique as possible.
On Monday, I will be back posting information on how to safely add templates to your blogger blog without losing all of your current information, and all the information that you may have in your sidebars. I’ll also share some of my favorite sources for free templates.
I admit that there are others who may know a lot more than I do about this, but because of that, their descriptions can be rather complicated. I am going to try and make it as simple as possible to understand, so do come back.
Have a great weekend, and HAPPY SPRING!
